Kolkata: A day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dared Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari to stop her from building of Puri like Lord Jagannath temple in East Midnapore’s Digha, Adhikari on Wednesday countered Mamata by asking her to implement Puri temple like condition that no one except Hindus should be allowed to enter the Jagannath temple.

Taking to social media, Adhikari asked the Chief Minister to clarify why the temple at Digha is named as ‘Jagannath Dham Cultural Centre’ and not as ‘Shree Shree Jagannath Temple’.

“Chief Minister should immediately give orders to change the proposed name of the temple. The name change should also be made in the tenders and documents of WBHIDCO, which is responsible for construction of the temple at Digha and the cost of which is borne from the state government exchequer. She questioned my courage and now I challenge her to issue Puri temple like notification that only Hindus can enter the Jagannath temple,” wrote Adhikari.

Taking further potshots at the West Bengal Chief Minister, the Leader of Opposition also mentioned that during the 2021 state Assembly election he defeated Mamata by 1956 votes.

Countering claims of Adhikari, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh said that in the 2026 state Assembly elections TMC will win back the Nandigram Assembly constituency.
