A man was brutally assaulted on a government-run bus in Jayankondam, located in Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district. According to reports, the attackers were inebriated and attacked the man with iron rods and wooden sticks after a heated argument broke out between them. The victim has been identified as Sivakumar.
Sivakumar, who was going somewhere on his bike, stopped under a tree to rest due to the scorching heat. A group of six men, reportedly all drunk, were sitting at a bus stop.
The men in the group passed some indecent comments and started misbehaving. Sivakumar started capturing their actions on his phone, leading to a verbal clash between them.
The verbal confrontation took a violent turn when the men allegedly attacked Sivakumar using rods and sticks.
Sivakumar tried to escape the assault and boarded a passing government bus. The attackers did not stop there; they boarded the bus after Sivakumar and continued their assault.
A bus passenger recorded the assault, and the video has since gone viral on social media. Severely injured, Sivakumar was rushed to Jayankondam Government Hospital, where he is currently being treated.
Following the victim's complaint, a case has been filed against the attackers. Police are working to identify and nab the culprits.
The incident has sparked a political reaction. BJP leader K Annamalai shared the video of the assault on his X handle and criticised the DMK-ruled state government.
"Swords swung in broad daylight in a government bus. This is the state of law and order in Tamil Nadu under the DMK Government. Today, public safety is not a guarantee, but a distant dream. The DMK has successfully dragged TN back by three decades in just 4 years," he wrote.
