Uttarkashi: In a devastating natural disaster, flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in Uttarkashi's Dharali on Tuesday, August 5, claimed at least four lives, with more than 60 people feared trapped or missing in the region.

The calamity, which struck the Kheer Ganga river, destroyed several homes, hotels, and even a centuries-old temple. As per reports, rescue efforts are facing mounting challenges due to road blockages and the continuous rainfall.

1. Four Dead, Dozens Missing in Flash Floods

At least four people have lost their lives and over 60 others are feared trapped or swept away in Uttarkashi’s Dharali after a cloudburst triggered devastating flash floods. Residents captured the terrifying visuals of the deluge engulfing the town and shared them on social media.

2. 60–70 People Believed Trapped; 25 Buildings Destroyed

District officials estimated that 60 to 70 people may still be trapped under the debris. Around 25 structures, including homes, hotels and guest houses, were completely destroyed by the flash floods, as per the reports.

3. Ancient Kalp Kedar Temple Buried Under Debris

A revered Shiva temple, Kalp Kedar, known for its architectural similarity to Kedarnath Dham, was completely buried under mud and rubble during the floods. The temple had reportedly remained partially submerged since an earlier disaster.

4. Kedarnath Yatra Suspended; Key Roads Blocked

Due to heavy rain, landslides and rising river levels, the Kedarnath Yatra has also been suspended until further notice. The motor road between Sonprayag and Gaurikund is currently blocked due to falling debris.

5. Over 130 People Rescued So Far

Despite the adverse conditions, over 130 individuals have been rescued from affected areas, according to Uttarakhand government officials. Rescue efforts are still ongoing in and around the affected areas.

6. 8-10 Army Personnel Missing in Lower Harsil

Indian Army officials confirmed that 8 to 10 soldiers are missing from a camp in the lower Harsil region. Despite their own personnel being affected, the Army continues relief operations along with ITBP, NDRF and SDRF teams.

7. Centre Assures Full Support

Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have spoken to CM Pushkar Dhami, assuring full central assistance. The CM has prioritised restoring electricity and connectivity.

8. Schools Closed in Multiple Districts Amid IMD Red Alert

With continued rainfall and further flash flood warnings, the Uttarakhand government has declared school holidays in at least 10 districts including Dehradun, Nainital and Rudraprayag.

9. Railway Disruption on Haridwar-Dehradun Line

Northern Railways reported a boulder on the tracks between Haridwar and Motichur, halting services. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and restoration work is underway.

10. Political Leaders Call for Environmental Responsibility

Political leaders across party lines expressed grief. CM Yogi Adityanath, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati all voiced concern, with Yadav linking the disaster to human-led environmental degradation and calling for urgent rescue measures.
