Lucknow: Tractor ownership in Uttar Pradesh has surged by 62% over the past eight years, symbolizing a major shift in agricultural practices and rural prosperity. From 88,000 tractors in 2016–17, the figure has climbed to 1,42,200 in 2024–25, reflecting a growing confidence among farmers in modern technology and mechanised farming.

This transformation stems from a series of targeted initiatives aimed at enhancing farm productivity. The government has integrated traditional knowledge with agricultural science through awareness drives, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and farmer training platforms.

Significant milestones include early farm loan waivers, completion of pending irrigation projects, transparent MSP procurement, promotion of millets, and timely availability of inputs.

These measures have led to increased crop yields—especially in pulses and oilseeds and improved incomes for sugarcane and small farmers alike. Subsidies up to 50% on tractor-driven equipment have further reduced operational costs. Tractors today serve diverse roles, from sowing to residue management.

Nationwide, tractor sales are also rising, with projections indicating a historic high of 10 lakh units in FY 2025, surpassing previous records. This mechanisation momentum underlines Uttar Pradesh’s growing role in India’s agri-economy and strengthens its claim as the nation’s emerging food basket.
