Lucknow: The Transport Department has made it mandatory for all commercial drivers, those operating autos, taxis, e-rickshaws, Ola, Uber, and Rapido to display their names, Aadhaar number, and mobile number on their vehicles. The rule is being introduced as a safety measure, particularly to protect women passengers.

The initiative will be implemented first in Lucknow. Registered drivers have been given a 15-day deadline to comply, failing which action will be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act. The information must be visible inside the vehicle in a manner that passengers can easily read it during the ride.

The move follows a letter sent by the Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission on May 26, urging steps to enhance safety for women in public transport. Recent incidents involving female passengers in autos and e-rickshaws had raised concerns over the lack of accountability in the sector.

According to Traffic Officer Prabhat Pandey, the new rule is expected to instill a sense of security among women, allowing them to share vehicle details with family if needed.
