Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh: Residents of the Maryadpatti locality are living in fear and frustration as drunken brawls have become an almost daily occurrence near a liquor outlet, which is located very close to a temple and two mosques.
The situation spiralled out of control on Saturday evening (June 7) when a violent clash between two groups escalated into a reckless hit-and-run, leaving three people injured and several vehicles damaged.
According to reports, the trouble began near the Bharat Talkies intersection when a heated argument broke out between men travelling in a black Thar and a white Hyundai Venue. What started as a verbal spat quickly turned into a physical scuffle. Amid the chaos, the Thar driver attempted to flee, ramming into multiple vehicles, including three motorcycles.
Video footage, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the Thar ploughing through the bikes, narrowly missing the riders. Two of the bikes were completely wrecked, and the Venue car was seen being dragged for several metres.
The incident created a panic-like situation in the already crowded area, causing a traffic jam, as well.
Locals Demand Closure of Liquor Shop, Police Begin Probe
Residents have been raising objections about the liquor shop’s proximity to religious sites, alleging that it attracts unruly crowds and disturbs the peace. “Disputes happen here every day. This shop has become a nightmare for us,” a local resident told India TV.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital. Officials are now analysing CCTV footage and viral videos to identify those involved.
“We’re taking this matter seriously and all individuals connected to the incident will be held accountable,” a police officer said.
