Deoria, Uttar Pradesh: In a deeply unsettling incident, a 60-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district died after slitting his own throat on the occasion of Bakrid, claiming he was making a sacrifice “in the name of Allah.”
The man, Ish Mohammad, was found writhing in pain in a hut near his home in Udhopur village. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
A Disturbing Scene Unfolded After Morning Namaz
According to the family members, Ish had offered the Bakrid namaz at the local mosque on Saturday morning (June 7). Upon returning home at around 10:00 AM, he went into a small hut situated a few metres away from his main house. Roughly an hour later, his wife Hajra Khatoon heard groans coming from the hut.
“When we reached there after hearing the sound of groaning, we saw blood flowing from his throat,” she recounted, as quoted by Dainik Bhaskar. Blood had soaked the floor. A knife was laying nearby. Hajra screamed in horror and alerted neighbours, who called the police.
The police, on arrival, transported Ish to a local hospital. Doctors referred him to Gorakhpur Medical College in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Inside the hut, a cot with a mosquito net was found, which was his usual resting place. Beside it was a small box containing incense and religious items. Nearby, pegs used to tie goats were visible. His head was reportedly facing north, and he had a black mask covering his face.

Ish Mohammad Left Behind a Chilling Note
Before taking the drastic step, Ish had penned a handwritten note that stunned authorities and relatives alike.
“A person sacrifices a goat after nurturing it like his son… I am sacrificing myself in the name of Allah’s messenger. No one has killed me. Bury it peacefully… The grave should be at the place where the peg is,” the note read.
His family described him as a deeply religious man who had returned just a day earlier from the dargah of Sufi saint Hazrat Syed Makhdoom Ashraf in Ambedkar Nagar.
Local clerics were quick to denounce the act. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, told Dainik Bhaskar, “In the light of Islam, sacrificing oneself is absolutely illegal. Islam does not allow such sacrifice. Allah has created man, he does not want human sacrifice.”
Ish is survived by his wife and three sons, two of whom lived with him, while the youngest works at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai.
