The Uttar Pradesh government is advancing the large-scale cultivation of Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the drumstick or miracle tree as part of its integrated strategy for nutrition security and sustainable agriculture. This initiative is being executed through home garden schemes and targeted support in aspirational districts, especially among low-income households and beneficiaries of housing missions.

Extensively researched for its nutritional value, Moringa leaves are rich in essential nutrients, with studies confirming they contain seven times more vitamin C than oranges and four times more calcium than milk. Recognized for its high antioxidant content and amino acid profile, the plant is increasingly being used to combat malnutrition.

Agronomists highlight Moringa’s diverse benefits. When used as fodder, it has been shown to increase milk production by up to 50 percent and improve cattle health and weight. As a natural pesticide, Moringa leaf extract contributes to a 25 percent boost in crop productivity. Its off-season flowering supports bee populations, aiding biodiversity and crop pollination.

The Environment Department has begun widespread distribution of saplings under poverty alleviation and greening programs. Varieties PKM-1 and PKM-2, known for high yield and climate resilience are being promoted in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, aligning well with Uttar Pradesh’s agroclimatic conditions.

In response to persistent child malnutrition, Moringa has also been integrated into community nutrition efforts. Proposals are underway to incorporate it into the PM Poshan Yojana, supplementing traditional vegetables in school meal programs.

This cultivation drive also supports the state’s long-term afforestation target of increasing tree cover from 9 to 15 percent by 2030. Field level training and farmer workshops are being actively conducted at Krishi Vigyan Kendras to ensure efficient cultivation, usage, and value chain development.
