Lucknow: Hours after the Supreme Court ordered that stray dogs in Delhi be sent to shelter homes, the issue resonated in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

BJP legislator Vijay Bahadur Pathak, through a calling attention motion, urged the state government to launch a statewide drive to control the growing menace of stray dogs. He stressed that effective measures were needed not only to prevent attacks but also to make Uttar Pradesh a rabies-free state.

Pathak said incidents of stray dog bites were on the rise in both urban and rural areas, creating fear among residents. He called for coordinated action by municipal bodies, veterinary departments, and health authorities to ensure timely vaccination, sterilisation, and sheltering of strays.

The Council also took up other matters, including a resolution congratulating ISRO astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla for becoming the first from the agency to reach a space station, the demand for reinstatement of 110 outsourced employees at Azamgarh Medical College, concerns over the dilapidated condition of school buildings, and a call to improve the state’s e-office system. However, it was the stray dog issue that dominated the proceedings, drawing cross-party agreement on the need for urgent intervention.
