Lucknow: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly will hold a workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) for lawmakers on August 10, making it the first state legislature in India to formally introduce AI training for its elected representatives.

The two-hour session, to be held at 3 p.m. inside the Assembly complex, will feature expert faculty from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), who will introduce legislators to AI tools that can enhance legislative work, including drafting bills, analyzing documents, and understanding public sentiment.

Announcing the initiative during a review meeting ahead of the Assembly’s monsoon session, Speaker Satish Mahana said the training aims to help lawmakers understand how AI can be integrated into parliamentary functioning. The monsoon session is scheduled to begin on August 11.

“This initiative will help our legislators harness the power of artificial intelligence in their everyday legislative duties,” Mahana said. “From searching past speeches to analyzing policy, AI can bring a transformative shift to how we work.”

The training is voluntary and will focus on both orientation and hands-on use of AI-based tools. According to officials, the session will also introduce the integration of AI into the Assembly’s mobile application, enabling lawmakers to instantly retrieve portions of their speeches, documents, and even video clips from legislative debates using AI-powered search and tagging.

Beyond these basic functions, the AI systems will support legislators in policy analysis by comparing laws across states and countries, evaluating the projected social and economic impact of proposed legislation, and detecting possible conflicts of interest in asset declarations. The platform will also draw on social media, surveys, and public petitions to give MLAs a better understanding of constituent sentiment on key issues.

Another key component of the initiative involves digitizing and organizing the Assembly’s archival records. Using AI, decades of legislative debates and documents will be made searchable and accessible through a dedicated dashboard. Lawmakers will also be able to track real-time progress and expenditures of government schemes across Uttar Pradesh.

This marks the second major step toward digital transformation in the UP Assembly, following the recent installation of AI-enabled cameras to enhance documentation and security within the House.

Looking ahead, the Assembly Secretariat plans to establish AI support units to assist MLAs with legal research, documentation, and data interpretation. Additional workshops will also be held to ensure legislators and their staff remain well-versed in emerging AI tools and practices.

During his inspection of the Assembly complex, Speaker Mahana also reviewed preparations for the monsoon session, with a focus on security, logistics, and weather-readiness. Officials discussed police deployment and the need to maintain uninterrupted access to Vidhan Bhavan, especially in the event of heavy rains. Special instructions were issued to manage waterlogging and drainage around the premises.

Among those present at the review were Assembly Principal Secretary Pradeep Dubey, Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna, Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, ADG (Security) Raghuvir Lal, Lucknow District Magistrate Vishak G, Police Commissioner Amrendra Sengar, Municipal Commissioner, Chief Security Officer of Vidhan Bhavan, and other senior officials.

With this AI initiative, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly hopes to set a precedent in blending tradition with technology—modernizing legislative work while strengthening governance through innovation.
