Kolkata: Rift between Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs widens after party MP Kalyan Banerjee on Sunday slammed another TMC MP Mahua Moitra and called her ‘homebreaker’.

This statement comes after Mahua accused Banerjee and TMC MLA Madan Mitra of ‘misogyny’ in the wake of alleged gangrape in South Kolkata law college.

Referring to Mahua’s recent marriage with former MP of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Pinaki Mishra, Banerjee claimed that Mahua is ‘anti-women’.

“Mahua called me ‘anti-women’, she is the biggest one. She broke a marriage of 40 years and married a man of 65 years old. I speak a lot in favour of women. After returning from honeymoon after one and a half months from the foreign shores, she started provoking again,” said the TMC Serampore MP.

Taking further potshots at the TMC Krishnanagar MP, Banerjee alleged that Mahua didn’t allow any woman to ‘grow’ under Krishnanagar Parliamentary constituency.

“I am not a misogynist. If I hate any lady then that is Mahua Moitra. She came to TMC in 2011 and became MLA in 2016 when the party was in full swing. Later she became MP and is now encashing her post,” further added Banerjee.

Notably, after arrest of three men for allegedly raping a college student inside the college premises and after it was found that the main accused is affiliated to TMC, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, “If a classmate rapes a classmate, who will provide security? Where is the party's ‘zero tolerance’ before or after the crime?”

Later, however, Banerjee clarified that he wanted to say that it is impossible for police to ensure safety inside colleges.

TMC MLA Madan Mitra also in his statement blamed the victim for the situation.

Following Banerjee and Mitra’s statements, Mahua called them ‘misogyny’.

Later taking to X, TMC clarified that “The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever. Our stance remains resolute; we have zero tolerance for crimes against women and demand the strictest possible punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime.”
