Bhubaneswar: Tensions erupted at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha's Bhubaneswar on Sunday night after a girl student from Nepal was found dead. The 20-year-old victim has been identified as Prakriti Lamsal. As per authorities, Lamsal died by suicide at her hostel room. Nepali students staged a protest at the campus of the university after Lamsal's death.
The protests prompted the Nepal Embassy to intervene in the matter. The police immediately swung into action and arrested the deceased's batchmate. The arrested person has been identified as 21-year-old Advik Srivastava, reported The Indian Express.
After the incident, around 500 Nepali students from Nepal reportedly staged protests. They the main road leading to the university. After the protests, the university management took the decision to send them home, but move sparked outrage and the authorities had to rollback, reported The Indian Express.
Students From Nepal Being Transported To Cuttack Station:
".We were pushed out of the hostel today. A girl from Nepal was found dead yesterday. We went to International Office to find out more details about this but we could not find anything. We were there overnight, sitting on a dharna. We were sent back to hostel from there. We were finally told to pack up and leave within an hour. We have nothing with us. We don't know how we will go. We have not even had food...We are trying to get a ticket," a student from Nepal ANI.
As per the report, the university management took bak its decisoin after the intervention of Nepal's Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. he sent his two officersto the university.
"It has come to our attention through media and social media that a Nepali student has died in the hostel of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Odisha and that Nepali students have been forcibly evicted from the hostel. The government is working on this matter through diplomatic channels and is in contact with the relevant authorities," KP Oli posted on its X handle.
Notably, the accused was arrested on Sunday evening from outside the airport. He has reportedly been booked under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
“On Sunday evening, we received a complaint from one Siddhant Sigdel that his cousin had committed suicide in her hostel room. The police team immediately visited the spot and seized the body. Our scientific team has collected her laptop and phone as demanded by the agitating student,” Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra said as reported by the media house.
The girl was pursuing B.Tech. Her body was sent for postmortem. As per the complaint lodged by the deceased's cousin, the accused was blackmailing Lamsal.
