Kolkata: Tension erupted at various parts of the state as the minorities protested against the WAQF (Amendment) bill.

At the Park Circus area in Kolkata, students of Aliah University protested and broke police barricades.

The students said that if the bill is not revoked then they bring out bigger protests.

At Suti, in Murshidabad police and RAF were seen running to disperse the protestors who suddenly turned violent. The same scene was seen in Amtala in South 24 parganas.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor Firhad Hakim said, “Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had already announced that when the present central government will go, the new government will revoke the bill. We should now just pray for the present central government’s downfall.”

Meanwhile, following Calcutta High Court’s nod, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited Mothabari in Malda where Hindus were affected by clashes from a particular community.

“I have met and have assured the Hindu families to stay firm. I have also told them that the probe of the incident will be done by the central agency so that the miscreants get proper punishment. We are by their side and will build their houses, shops and even temples. I have also asked them to keep faith in law,” said the Leader of the Oppositions.

Adhikari also mentioned that tension over WAQF protests is being done ‘deliberately’.
