Chandigarh: Call it a dismal job scenario in public or private sectors, devaluation in educational degrees or Haryanavi youths' passion for the uniform-service that more and more highly qualified candidates are lapping up even constables’ posts in Haryana police.

Sample this: The new batch of the state police constables which passed out from Haryana Police Training Centre, Bhondsi, Gurugram, last week, included a Phd, several MBAs, MTechs, BTechs, LLBs, BCA, Bed and some post-graduates.

According to official information, this batch of a total of 783 constables included at least 200 post-graduates, one PhD, two LLBs, eight MBAs, three MTechs, 34 BTechs, six MCAs, eight BCAs and over 30 BEd.

Addressing the passing-out ceremony, Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, Shatrujeet Kapur said that it is because of the transparent recruitment process, that highly qualified youths are joining the state police and this also means that well-educated and well-aware youths are now part of the state police force.

He said that of the total constables in this batch, 718 came from rural areas of the state and 65 from urban areas. He also highlighted the success of the state police in checking the cybercrime and said this year the state has seen a 50% decline in the cybercrimes and five times more recovery in cyber frauds. He also held there has been a remarkable decline in the crimes against women in the past two years and the Haryana police has also been a significant campaign against drugs in the state.

Govind Mohan, Union government home secretary, who chaired the ceremony, inspected the parade and took the salute.

Speaking on the occasion, he exhorted the newly recruited to be disciplined, mentally strong and technically sound, and added that the trainees who had understood the three new laws implemented by the Central government – the Indian judicial code, the Indian civil defence code and the Indian evidence Act – will implement them effectively.

When asked for comments on highly qualified candidates joining for post of constables in Haryana police, B Satheesh Balan, inspector general of police (IGP), Indian Reserve Battalion, Bhondsi, Gurugram, told FPJ that it is a welcome trend.

``It is primarily because of the state youths’ passion for uniform-service – be it army, para-military forces or police. We have also noticed that several well qualified candidates – while preparing for higher posts – join Haryana police as constables by clearing the test on merit basis so as to secure a government job first and then crack the higher competitive tests in the police force itself or elsewhere of their choice, he adds.
