RG Kar Rape And Murder Case: Kolkata Court To Deliver Verdict Today; Timeline Of The Case

A sessions court in Kolkata will deliver its verdict in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The judgment will be delivered 57 days after the commencement of the trial in the case which sparked nationwide protest.

Kolkata: A sessions court in Kolkata will deliver its verdict in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The judgment will be delivered 57 days after the commencement of the trial in the case which sparked nationwide protest. Sanjay Roy, who was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, allegedly raped and murdered a postgraduate trainee at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 last year.

The judgement will be delivered by Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court. The trainee doctor's parents have also filed an application before the court seeking further investigation into the case.

August 9: The PGT doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on the third floor of the seminar hall of the hospital. Her semi-naked body was recovered.

August 10: The Kolkata Police arrested Roy.

August 13: The Calcutta High Court took cognizance of the matter terming the case. It also urged the protesting doctors to resume service. The case was transferred to the Central BUreau of Investigation (CBI). Thge accused was taekn into custody by the federal agency.

August 14: The 'Reclaim the Night' protest was called by students and civil society organisations.

Midnight of August 15: Tne RG Kar Hospital was stormed by a mob. The emergency department and nursing station were reportedly vandalised. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a nationwide withdrawal of services on August 17 for 24 hours.

August 18: The Supreme Court took note of the incident and the hearing was scheduled for August 20.

August 20: The top court constituted a 10-member task force to draft a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors across the country. The West Bengal government and the Kolkata Police were asked to submit the status report.

August 24: Sanjay Roy and six others underwent lie detection tests.

August 25: The CBI raided the houses of former RG Kar Hospital's principal Sandip Ghosh, x-deputy Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others.

September 2: The CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh in connection with alleged financial fraud at the hospital when he was the principal.

September 14: Sandip Ghosh was arrested by the CBI in connection with the case. The federal agency also arrested Kolkata police officer Abhijit Mondal over delay in registering the FIR in the case.

October 7: A chargesheet was filed against Roy.

October 21: Protesting ended their 17-day hunger strike after meeting with West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.
