Jaipur: To promote and explore new avenues of tourism in Rajasthan, the state government has planned to conserve and restore heritage havelies of Shekhawati region of the state.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has directed the officials to conduct a survey of 662 heritage havelies in Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu districts, popularly known as Shekhawati region.

“Conservation and restoration of heritage havelies of Shekhawati located in Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu districts is the top priority of the state government. If there is a need to bring an Act for their conservation, it can be brought,” said CM Bhajan Lal Sharma to the officials.

Sharma directed that all heritage monuments in the state should be surveyed and developed, as this is the precious heritage of Rajasthan.

Notably, the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan is the home of entrepreneurs and wealthy merchants who in the 18th to early 20th centuries built these elaborately decorated mansions. These havelis, particularly in towns like Mandawa, Nawalgarh, and Jhunjhunu, are famous for their intricate frescoes depicting a wide range of subjects, including mythological stories, European figures. Shekhawati is often called the "open art gallery of Rajasthan" due to the sheer number and quality of the painted havelies spread across its towns and villages.
