New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ignited a political controversy after he referred to Lord Ram and other Hindu deities as "mythological figures" during a lecture at Brown University in the United States. In a viral video, Gandhi could be heard saying, “All are mythological figures; Lord Ram was of that type, where he was forgiving, he was compassionate.”

BJP Labels Gandhi's Remarks As 'Anti-Hindu'

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly condemned Gandhi's statement, accusing him and the Congress party of undermining Hindu beliefs. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised Gandhi, saying, “The country will never forgive Gandhi for doubting the existence of Lord Ram.”

He further alleged that Congress has a history of questioning Lord Ram, opposing the Ram temple, and using terms like "Hindu terror." “This is the biggest example of Congress being anti-Hindu and anti-India,” Poonawalla added.

BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan also weighed in, sharing the clip on social media and reminding the public of the Congress-led UPA government's 2007 affidavit to the Supreme Court, which stated there was no historical proof of Lord Ram's existence. Kesavan remarked, “Rahul Gandhi’s Congress-led UPA Govt (2007) had filed an affidavit in SC stating no historical proof of Lord Ram.”

The controversy has reignited debates over the Congress party's stance on Hinduism. In 2007, the Congress-led UPA government withdrew an affidavit filed by the Archaeological Survey of India that claimed there was no evidence to establish the existence of Lord Ram and the Ram Setu as a man-made bridge.

BJP leaders have pointed to this incident as evidence of Congress's inconsistent and, at times, dismissive approach towards Hindu sentiments.
