Mumbai: Former Prime Minister and veteran Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh's last rites was held at Delhi's Nigambodh Ghat today. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP, Rahul Gandhi attacked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and claimed that Manmohan Singh has been insulted by the Narendra Modi government as his last rites were performed at the Nigambodh Ghat.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded space for a memorial for Manmohan Singh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Kharge and Manmohan Singh's family that the government would allocate space for the memorial. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that a Trust has to be formed and the space for the memorial would be allotted to it, until then cremation and other formalities can be done.
Rahul Gandhi targeted Narendra Modi government over the cremation of the former Prime Minister and said that they should have shown respect to Manmohan Singh who made the country and the community proud.
Rahul Gandhi said, "The great son of Mother India and the first Prime Minister of the Sikh community, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji has been totally insulted by the present government by performing his last rites today at the Nigambodh Ghat. He was the Prime Minister of India for a decade, during his tenure the country became an economic superpower and his policies are still the support of the poor and backward classes of the country."
He further added, "Till date, respecting the dignity of all former Prime Ministers, their last rites were performed at authorized burial sites so that every person could have the last darshan and pay homage without any inconvenience. Dr. Manmohan Singh deserves our highest respect and a memorial. The government should have shown respect to this great son of the country and his proud community."
