Chandigarh: Punjab ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Ludhiana west Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, 58, died of bullet injuries from his own licenced pistol under mysterious circumstances at his house late Friday night.
Stating that it could be a case of ``accidental fire’’ from his own pistol, police said that the legislator suffered a bullet injury to his head . The incident reportedly took place around midnight when his wife was in another room.
She rushed to his room after hearing the gunshot and found him lying in a pool of blood following which his security guards rushed Gogi to the hospital.
Police said that the bullet pierced Gorgi temple and he was rushed to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared brought dead, and added that a post mortem would be conducted to know more details about the incident.
Earlier in the day, Gogi had met Vidhan Sabha speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal over the issue of cleaning of highly polluted ``Buddha Nallah’’ and also visited Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir where a theft had taken place recently and had assured an action in the matter.
Meanwhile, several political leaders including chief minister Bhagwant Mann, AAP state president Aman Arora, top Congress leaders including Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa and several other senior leaders of other parties expressed shock over Gogi’s death.
Gogi is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Gogi, a first time legislator, who was earlier with Congress for about two decades, had joined AAP in 2022. He defeated two-time Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the 2022 assembly polls. He was also a two-time municipal councillor and chairman, Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation during previous Congress rule.
Gogi was in the news about two years ago when he demolished the foundation stone of the ``Buddha Nullah’’ rejuvenation project reportedly in protest against the long delay in the implementation of the project.
