Days after N Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister of Manipur, the Centre on Thursday promulgated President's rule in the violence-marred state.

President Murmu has imposed President's Rule in Manipur after determining that the state government could no longer function in accordance with India's Constitution. This decision came after receiving and reviewing reports from the state Governor.

The central government's intervention ensued because the BJP was unable to reach an agreement on who should be the next Chief Minister. The previous Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, had resigned from his position on Sunday after meeting with BJP's central leadership in Delhi.

Despite efforts by BJP's northeast coordinator Sambit Patra to mediate discussions with party MLAs in Imphal, they were unable to reach a consensus on leadership, even though there appeared to be some progress on Tuesday.

After N Biren Singh's resignation Congress party had announced that it would oppose any move to promulgate President’s rule in Manipur.

Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh in a post on the X said: “For the people of Manipur, Congress party opposes any move to impose President's Rule in Manipur now as well as the party also opposes any move to place Manipur Legislative Assembly under suspended animation now.”

The President's Rule in Manipur was imposed while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was out of the country. Questions are now being raised about why the Centre chose not to implement President's Rule after getting approval from Parliament.
