Alipurduar/ Kolkata: Blowing the poll bugle ahead of 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday during his maiden visit to Bengal after ‘Operation Sindoor’ slammed Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the alleged cruelty in Murshidabad and Malda.
“People of Bengal are saying that they don’t want ‘Nimam Sarkar’ (cruel government. Just for appeasement politics hooligans are given free hand in Bengal and police remain inactive. Everyone has seen the cruelty that took place in Murshidabad and Malda where houses of innocent people got torched,” said Modi.
Notably, Modi visited north Bengal’s Alipurduar to inaugurate a gas pipeline service before addressing a public meeting.
Taking further potshots at the state government, the Prime Minister mentioned that TMC only wants ‘to play politics’ in everything.

“Recently we held a Niti Aayog meeting where Chief Ministers of all states have visited to discuss about the development but the Chief Minister of West Bengal remained absent. Several projects of the Central government are not implemented in West Bengal. The TMC government never cooperates with the central government. The education system of the state has gone for a toss due to the corruption and several people’s future became uncertain and TMC is blaming the judiciary for it,” further added the Prime Minister.
Listing the problems faced by Bengal under TMC regime, Modi added that the first problem is ‘lawlessness’, the second problem is ‘atrocities against women’, the third problem is ‘growing unemployment’, fourth problem is ‘selfish politics of the ruling party’ and fifth is ‘corruption’.
Speaking about the ‘Operation Sindoor’, Modi said that India had given a befitting reply to Pakistan.
“This is the land where ‘Sindoor Khela’ is done. After the Pahalgam incident several people of Bengal also wanted a befitting reply to Pakistan. Terrorists had dared to wipe out the sindoor of our sisters, but our forces made them realise the strength of the sindoor. ‘Operation Sindoor’ is still not over. Wherever there is war, Pakistan faces defeat,” the Prime Minister added.
Countering the claims of the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated, ‘Modi is now selling Sindoor.’
Mamata added that the Prime Minister is ‘politicising’ the ‘Operation Sindoor’.
“The name is given for political reasons. Sindoor is the grace for mothers and sisters. Husbands put sindoor on their wives. The comments of the PM are as if he is everyone’s husband. He should not do this. If you respect sindoor then first apply the same on your wife,” further added the West Bengal Chief Minister.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claims, said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had started violence in Murshidabad and Malda.
“Our government has a humane face. We don’t support violence. BJP plays divide and rule politics. I am telling the saffron camp who are speaking of ‘Operation Bengal’ in the PM's presence, that Trinamool Congress (TMC) is ready to go for elections tomorrow. The Prime Minister has to bring people from Assam. This proves that people of North Bengal don’t trust BJP otherwise they would not bring people from Assam,” said the West Bengal Chief Minister.
Speaking about the reason for not attending the Niti Aayog meeting, Mamata said that she doesn’t want to get insulted again.
“I was not allowed to speak and after five minutes my microphone was stopped. I don’t take lunch so why will I go just to get humiliated and insulted? Why did you change the name of Subhas Chandra Bode planning Commission? You have even forgotten Gandhi. It is of no use to attend the meeting if I am not allowed to speak. The central government had frozen several crores of money due for Bengal. Send us our dues,” mentioned Mamata.
Speaking about the sacked teachers, Mamata stated that the state government is trying to find a ‘solution’ to the problem.
“The teachers didn’t lose their jobs because of us. The BJP and the CPI (M) had taken away the jobs and on the contrary TMC government is trying to save the jobs,” claimed Mamata.
BJP state president and MoS Sukanta Majumdar stated that comments of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee makes it clear that ‘she is a pathetic liar and certified uneducated person’.
