Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to Shibu Soren by visiting Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where the prominent tribal leader and three-time chief minister of Jharkhand had died at the age of 81. PM Modi also met with Hemant Soren, Jharkhand's Chief Minister, and offered condolences on the passing of his father.
After his visit, PM Modi posted in the Santali language on X, writing, "Went to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay homage to Shri Shibu Soren Ji. Also met his family. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji and the admirers of Shri Shibu Soren Ji."
Along with the post, he shared pictures of himself consoling Hemant Soren.
About the Santali language
Santali is an Austroasiatic language spoken by about 7-8 million people, mainly the Santal tribal community across eastern India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It became the first tribal language to be included in India's Eighth Schedule in 2003, which grants it official recognition. The language uses the distinctive Ol Chiki script, created in 1925, and boasts rich oral traditions that maintain Santal cultural heritage.
Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu also visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay respect to the departed soul.
