Over 500 Nepali students were asked to leave the campus of the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar after a large number of foreign students protested over the alleged suicide of a female student from Nepal on Monday.
Sensing the situation getting out of control, the KIIT university issued a notice stating "The University is closed until further notice for all the International students from Nepal." The students were asked to vacate the university campus immediately.
According to reports, the Nepali students were taken to Cuttack Railway Station, which is 30 km away from the university. The students, including the female students, were left stranded at the railway station as some of them did not have tickets for their journey home.
According to reports, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal died by suicide in her hostel room on February 16. It is being suspected that she took the extreme step due to a strained relationship with a male student from the university.
After the incident, students from Nepal held protests and demanded the arrest of the boy for abetting the girl's suicide.
"We had received a police complaint about the reported suicide of a Nepali female student on February 16. We immediately rushed to the hostel room and tried to pacify students who were visibly agitated over the incident," The Hindu quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police for Bhubaneswar Pinak Mishra as saying.
According to police, the girl's mobile phone and laptop have been seized.
The university administration issued a statement saying that the alleged boyfriend has been detained for questioning. "It is believed that the student may have taken this step following a personal dispute or issue between them," read the clarification issued by the Director of Public Relations of KIIT.
