NHRC Issues Notice Over Man’s Suicide After Alleged Police Torture In Uttar Pradesh

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. Therefore, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh calling for a detailed report on the matter, within two weeks.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a man committed suicide on 15th July, 2025, after alleged physical torture by the police in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh. Reportedly, the police had called the man to a police station following a complaint against him by his wife.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. Therefore, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh calling for a detailed report on the matter, within two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on 16th July, 2025, the victim reached the police station with his father for a compromise, but he was tortured and a bribe was demanded to settle the matter.
