AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi expressed deep condolences over the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, which claimed 18 lives and left over a dozen injured. On Sunday, the Hyderabad MP demanded the formation of an independent, judicially-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. He also called for an inquiry into the systemic failures of Indian Railways, holding the government accountable for mismanagement.
Taking to X, Owaisi criticised the BJP government, alleging that it was attempting to cover up the tragedy rather than addressing the real issues. He outlined two key demands: first, a thorough investigation by an independent SIT under judicial supervision, and second, an inquiry into the operational failures of Indian Railways that may have contributed to the disaster.
"Indian Railways is a lifeline for millions of Indians and does not deserve the mismanagement of the Narendra Modi government," Owaisi remarked. He stated that the catastrophe could have been avoided with better planning and crowd control measures.
Details On The Stampede
As many as 18 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede that broke out late Saturday night at the crowded railway station. According to reports, the stampede occurred late Saturday night when a massive crowd gathered at platform numbers 14 and 15 of New Delhi Railway Station.
Many passengers were attempting to board trains heading toward Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh is currently underway. The sudden surge in the number of passengers led to chaos, eventually triggering the deadly stampede. Visuals of the chaos surfaced on the internet.
Eyewitnesses reported that the platform became overcrowded as more people kept arriving, with little intervention from authorities to manage the swelling crowd. The absence of clear crowd control measures, combined with a lack of timely announcements and guidance, reportedly worsened the situation.
