Kolkata: In violence affected Murshidabad, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday had urged for peace in the state and also asked people not to get provoked by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or any extremists.
“Didi doesn’t like violence. The women should come forward and stop violence. I want to see light and not darkness. If anyone indulges in violence then remember didi will not be there for you. Some outsiders come to ignite people and few people fall pray and do violence. There should be no division among people,” said Mamata.
Notably, her statement comes after protests over the WAQF (Amendment) Bill turned violent in parts of Murshidabad, including Samserganj, Suti, and Dhulian, that took lives of three persons.
Mamata while meeting few affected families assured them of all help from the government and also stated that strict action will be taken against those who are behind the violence.
Meanwhile, following Calcutta High Court’s order Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari held a sit-in demonstration with the affected Hindu families from Murshidabad in Salt Lake near Kolkata.
“Mamata had said that BJP is responsible for the violence. How are these Hindu families responsible for the WAQF (Amendment) Bill? Mamata said that the police are ours and no one will open fire. The police didn’t take any action while the violence took place. She went to Murshidabad after three weeks of the incident. All Hindus should unite,” mentioned Adhikari.
On the other hand, state Chief Secretary Manoj Pant had written a letter to the Union Home Secretary requesting that the Bengali migrant labourers should not be ‘mis-treated’ in other states.
