Srinagar: In a major breakthrough for security forces, two terrorists were killed on Saturday in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Gurez. Among the slain terrorists was Hizbul Mujahideen commander Bagu Khan. He was popularly known as "human GPS" and Samandar Chacha. He and his associate were reportedly shot dead during an infiltration attempt from the Nowshera Naar area.
Khan was responsible for facilitating more than 100 infiltration attempts in the Gurez sector, reported India Today, citing sources. Due to his knowledge of the terrain in the sector, he was a well-known face in the terror circles.
He was actively involved in terrorist activities for over 25 years. He was a resident of Muzaffarabad in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Khan's encounter is being considered as a major blow to the terror network in the valley.
It is the second infiltration bid foiled by the India Army in a week. On Thursday, two infiltrators were killed in a gunfight with security forces in the Gurez sector.
"Based on intelligence provided by JKP regarding likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched by #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice in Gurez Sector. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists," the Indian Army's Chinar Corps said in an X post.
In July this year, the three terrorists, who carried out the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, were killed in the Indian Army's Operation Mahadev. The slain terrorsits were identified as Suleiman (Faisal Jatt or Hashim Musa), Afghan and Jibran.
