Kolkata: Chilling details have emerged about Monojit Mishra, the main accused in the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25. Known on campus as “Mango”, Mishra was reportedly described by students and insiders as a long-time predator who operated with impunity, leveraging political links and instilling fear among peers and staff alike.
According to a college insider quoted by The Times of India, Mishra had a disturbing obsession with sexually abusive behaviour, morphing photos of women, filming private moments, and circulating them among friends. “He had a tendency to record videos of almost everything,” said the source.
History of Abuse
As per the report, sudents allege that Mishra, an ad-hoc staff member and a former student, had multiple complaints of molestation, harassment, physical assault and extortion lodged against him. Yet no action was taken.
“The college authorities knew everything and gave full support to Mango. This wasn’t a stray incident. A proper sexual harassment complaint was submitted, but no action followed. No one at this college is safe," said a third-year student as quoted by TOI.
Mishra is also accused of threatening and assaulting students who participated in the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest last year. Students claim he openly flaunted his connections to the Trinamool Congress, declaring that “nothing will happen to him”.
SIT Formed After Shocking CCTV Footage Surfaces
The Kolkata Police has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the gang rape. An officer confirmed that CCTV footage recovered from the college, spanning 3.30 PM to 10.50 PM on June 25, supports the survivor’s written complaint.
“The footage shows the movements of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim. It confirms the girl’s allegations,” said an investigating officer.
Police suspect the crime may have been triggered after the survivor rejected a marriage proposal from Mishra.
Meanwhile, protests erupted across the city, with BJP leaders, including Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, detained while attempting to march to the law college.
This is the second major campus rape case to shake the city in under a year, reigniting public outrage over institutional inaction and student safety.
