India may soon get its first ever woman Chief Justice. According to reports, Justice BV Nagarathna who is presently a judge of the Karnataka High Court is one of nine individuals who have been nominated by the Supreme Court Collegium for an elevation to the top court. She is likely to take over the post in 2027, albeit with an expected tenure of around a month.

As the news broke however, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana censured the reports, contending that the process was ongoing. Dubbing the speculative reports as being "very unfortunate" he added that meetings would be held and decisions taken in the days to come.

"You are all aware we need to appoint judges to this court. The process is ongoing. Meetings will be held and decisions will be taken. The process of appointment of judges is sacrosanct and has certain dignity attached to it. My media friends must understand and recognise the sanctity of this process," he said.
