Srinagar: A terrorist has been neutralised in an ongoing encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday. Upon receiving intelligence input about the presence of terrorists in the forest area of Akhal, the security forces launched a search operation on Friday.
The gun battle erupted after terrorists opened fire on the security forces. The security personnel retaliated strongly. The operation was codenamed "Operation Akhal".
"Intermittent and intense fire fight continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the nooze while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far. Operation (Akhal) continues," The Indian Army's Chinar Corps said in an X post.
Earlier this week, three terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack were killed by security forces under 'Operation Mahadev'. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha confirmed the news of the killing of the three terrorists during his address in the Lok Sabha. The slain terrorists were identified as Suleiman (Faisal Jatt or Hashim Musa), Afghan and Jibran.
"In a joint Operation Mahadev, the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police have neutralised three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack," Shah said.
"In the Operation Mahadev, Suleman alias Faizal..., Afghan and Jibran, these three terrorists were killed in a joint operation of the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police. Suleman was an A-category commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Afghan was an A-category Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist. And Jibran was also an A-grade terrorist... All three terrorists who killed our citizens in the Baisaran valley have been eliminated," he further stated.
A day later, on Wednesday, two more terrorists were gunned down in an encounter that broke out in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch.
