Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Mid-Term: Know Everything About The 14th Vice President Of India

Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India in 2022. He defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential election held on August 6, 2022.

New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar unexpectedly resigned from his post on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, citing health reasons. "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution," the letter read.

Early Life

Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951 in a normal farmer family in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. He completed his early education from the village school itself. After this, he went to study at Chittorgarh Sainik School after getting a scholarship. Dhankhar was selected in the National Defense Academy, but he chose not go. He obtained a BSc (Hons) degree from Maharaja College, Jaipur. He completed his law studies from Rajasthan University.

Law Career

He then started practicing law while staying in Jaipur and was a well-known lawyer of the Rajasthan High Court.

Dhankhar became a member of Rajasthan Bar Council in the year 1979. On March 27, 1990, he became a senior advocate in Rajasthan High Court. At the same time, he also kept practicing in the Supreme Court. He was also elected President of Rajasthan High Court Bar Association in 1987.

14th Vice President of India

Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India in 2022. He defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential election held on August 6, 2022. Dhankhar got 528 votes out of a total of 725, while Margaret Alva got 182 votes. Before serving the office of Vice President, he was the Governor of West Bengal.

Historic No-Confidence Motion Against Jagdeep Dhankhar

Earlier in December 2024, INDIA bloc moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, alleging partisan functioning of the House. For the first time in Rajya Sabha's history, a motion to remove the Chairman was introduced. However, it was rejected by the deputy chairman
