India's Major Push For Semiconductor Mission: Centre Approves ₹3,706 Cr Joint Venture Of HCL And Foxconn Near Jewar Airport

New Delhi: In a major boost to Atamanirbhar Bharat, the Centre on Wednesday pumped in Rs 3,706 crore in the India Semiconductor Mission. After the cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the cabinet gave approval to India's sixth semiconductor unit in Uttar Pradesh's Jewar. This is a joint venture of HCL and Foxconn.

"Union Cabinet has approved India's 6th semiconductor unit in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. Under India Semiconductor Mission, 5 semiconductor units have been approved so far and rapid construction is going on there. Production at one unit will begin this year. In this connection, there is one more super-advanced unit. This is a joint venture of HCL and Foxconn," Vaishnaw said.

This plant will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs, and myriad of other devices that have display and its design output capacity is 36 million units per month. The plant is designed for 20,000 wafers per month.

"The unit approved today is a joint venture of HCL and Foxconn. HCL has a long history of developing and manufacturing hardware. Foxconn is a global major in electronics manufacturing. Together they will set up a plant near Jewar airport in Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority or YEIDA," the Ministry of Electronics and IT said in a press release.

"Students and entrepreneurs in 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are working on world class latest design technologies for developing new products. 20 products developed by the students of these academic students have been taped out by SCL Mohali," it added.

With the rapid growth of laptop, mobile phone, server, medical device, power electronics, defence equipment, and consumer electronics manufacturing, the demand for semiconductors are increasing.
