Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is set to introduce the next-generation E10 Shinkansen trains, simultaneously with Japan. This significant development underscores the depth of the strategic partnership between India and Japan, marking a new chapter in high-speed rail technology and international cooperation.

"The E10 Shinkansen, Japan’s most advanced bullet train, will replace the current E5 series in Japan and will debut concurrently in both countries. India’s 508 km high-speed corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be the first outside Japan to fully operate the new-generation Shinkansen, reflecting Tokyo’s confidence in India as a trusted strategic and technological partner" said an official Indian Railway.

Shinkansen Technology Redefines Speed, Safety, and Reliability

The entire MAHSR corridor is being developed using Japanese Shinkansen technology, globally known for its unmatched standards in speed, safety, and reliability. The E10 model is expected to set new benchmarks with state-of-the-art systems for passenger comfort, aerodynamics, seismic resilience, and energy efficiency. This technological transfer reaffirms Japan’s commitment to supporting India in building cutting-edge infrastructure.

Civil Construction in Full Swing

Civil works across the MAHSR route are progressing rapidly. A 310 km viaduct — over 60% of the corridor — has already been completed. In addition, 15 river bridges have been built, with 4 more nearing completion. Of the 12 stations planned, 5 are completed, and another 3 are close to being finished.

One of the engineering highlights is the underground station at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. Located 32.5 meters below ground, the foundation is being designed to support a 95-meter high commercial tower, setting a precedent for integrated urban infrastructure.

Another milestone achieved is the breakthrough on the 21 km undersea tunnel section between BKC and Thane — a first-of-its-kind in India and a significant engineering accomplishment in the region.

Procurement and Systems Integration Progressing

Alongside civil construction, track laying, installation of overhead electrical lines, and procurement of signaling and control systems are advancing swiftly. Work in Maharashtra — which had seen slower progress earlier — has gained momentum, further accelerating the project timeline.

Future Corridors on the Horizon

The success of the MAHSR project is paving the way for future high-speed rail corridors in India. According to officials, several new corridors are already under active consideration, signaling a broader adoption of high-speed rail as a transformative mode of transport in the country.

A Landmark in Indo-Japanese Collaboration

The introduction of the E10 Shinkansen in India is not just about modernizing transport — it is a symbol of the deepening Indo-Japanese strategic and technological collaboration. As the first E10 trains roll out in both nations, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train will stand as a global showcase of what can be achieved through trust, innovation, and shared vision.

"This high-speed rail initiative is not only reshaping how India moves but also demonstrating its growing capability to execute complex, world-class infrastructure in collaboration with global partners" said a senior railway official.
