Jalandhar: After opposing Punjab government's 'bulldozer action' against drug peddlers in the state, Cricketer turned Rajya Sabha MP Harbajan Singh took a U-turn.
A day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Rajya Sabha MP opposed the demolition of the properties of drug smugglers by the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government, the former Indian cricketer extended support to the police and the government.
Harbhajan Singh in a post on X said, "Let me make it very clear. @AAPPunjab govt is the first govt in Punjab taking such drastic action against drug’s smugglers. I stand in complete support of Punjab Police and the government. Finally we have a govt which is serious about eradicating drugs and the message is clear . Together We will win this war against drugs. Let’s make our Great state free from any kind of Nasha."
What Harbajan Singh Said?
Talking to the media, Harbhajan Singh on Wednesday said, “Those selling drugs should be arrested. But in my opinion, somebody’s house should not be demolished. I am not in favour of properties being bulldozed.”
Somnath Bharti Slams Harbhajan Singh
AAP leader Somnath Bharti taking on micro-blogging website X in a long note slammed Singh and said, "Harbhajan Singh ji, learnt that you have opposed bulldozer action of AAP’s Punjab Govt against Drug Lords who have destroyed youth of Punjab-future of Punjab."
The post further read, "These drug lords have ruined lakhs of families, they have trampled dreams of old aged parents, they have put on fire dreams of newly wedded girls and you are favouring them?? "
Bharti further listed out why Singh's statement was uncalled for and said, "Your statement favouring drug mafia is absolutely uncalled for on the following three counts. 1. These drug lords have destroyed the land of our revered Gurus who taught the world नाम खुमारी नानका, चढ़ी रवे दिन रात!. Land of spirituality has been converted to Land of Drugs and the ones who are responsible for this must be punished severely. 2. You are a youth icon and you should be seen saying and doing things to save the youth of youth of Punjab but your statement reflects otherwise. 3. Saying anything to the contrary of the public statements or actions of the party, our leaders and our Governments should be strictly avoided. There is enough democracy in my party and you should have opted to voice any such thing before the leadership and not in public."
"We all have seen you as a hero of the country and hence I am not saying anything more than this. Please understand that we all have sacrificed every worldly pleasure to bring the party to this level and hence be mindful of what you say in public," he added.
Punjab Government's Bulldozer Action Against Drug Traffickers
The Punjab government launched its campaign against drug traffickers on February 28. It has demolished more than two dozen illegal structures built using drug money since the crackdown started.
