Hardoi: Patients and attendants at Hardoi District Hospital and the Autonomous State Medical College are battling unbearable heat and poor conditions, as widespread power cuts and defunct fans leave them drenched in sweat and gasping for relief.

With temperatures soaring beyond 42°C, the lack of basic cooling facilities has turned the state-run medical centre into a furnace, forcing people to bring hand fans just to survive.

Tweeting about the condition of the facility, Congress wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Look at the condition of Hardoi Medical College in UP. There is no electricity in the ward, patients and their attendants are suffering from heat and are forced to swing their bedding. This is the truth of the 4 trillion economy. Where crores were spent on publicity, but not even a smidge of work was done on the ground. The public is suffering, leader eating mushrooms."

Here are some visuals from the hospital:

Pediatric Ward Crisis

In the government-run district hospital, which also functions under the medical college, the paediatric ward is among the worst affected. Faulty fans and regular power outages have left young patients exposed to relentless heat, with caretakers left to manually fan them.

According to a report by Amar Ujala, locals allege that the hospital administration has been ignoring repeated pleas to fix the cooling infrastructure. With no sign of repair in sight, patients and residents are now demanding urgent government intervention to restore power, repair fans and ensure functional cooling systems across the hospital.

ACs Idle, Coolers Dry In OPD, Women’s Ward

According to Amar Ujala, more than 2,000 prescriptions are issued daily at the OPD, where four ACs have been installed, but only two are working. Coolers, meant to provide respite, often sit bone-dry as water is never refilled. From the ground floor counters to the women’s hospital ward, patients are left drenched in sweat and unable to breathe properly due to the intense humidity and hot air blowing from old fans.

In response, Medical College Principal Dr Jevin Bishnu Gogoi told the publication that idle ACs in the OPD have been ordered to be restarted and efforts are underway to address the crisis.
