Ahmedabad: Amit Chavda has been appointed as the new president of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), while Dr. Tushar Chaudhary has been made the leader of the opposition in the Gujarat Assembly.

After the resignation of Shaktisinh Gohil following the debacle in the recently held by-elections in Kadi and Visavadar assembly constituency,  Anklav MLA Amit Chavda has been appointed as the president of GPCC.

Amit Chavda is the maternal uncle of former Gujarat Congress state president Bharatsinh Solanki. He has become the state president for the second time. He became the state president from 2018 to 2021. It is worth mentioning that Geniben Thakor and Lalji Desai were also in the race for the state president.

It is worth mentioning that on July 10, veteran leaders of Gujarat Congress were called to Delhi. In this meeting, the name of the state president was discussed. After this, on Thursday,  Amit Chavda was announced as the state president. The Congress, which has been struggling to come to power for 30 years, has again fielded old faces. Out of which Amit Chavda is an OBC and Tushar Chaudhary is a tribal face.

Shaktisinh Gohil resigned as soon as the Kadi-Visavadar election results were announced. Shaktisinh resigned from the post of Congress state president within 4 hours of the Kadi and Visavadar by-election results being announced on June 23, 2025. Shailesh Parmar was made the acting state president in place of Shaktisinh Gohil.

Amit Chavda comes from a political family. His grandfather Ishwarbhai Chavda was once a Member of Parliament. Ishwarbhai was the father-in-law of former Gujarat Chief Minister Madhavsinh Solanki. Thus, he is the maternal uncle of former Gujarat Congress state president Bharatsinh Solanki. It is worth mentioning that Amit Chavda is the son of Ajit Chavda, son of former MP Ishwarbhai Chavda. In this regard, he is the grandson of the former MP.

Earlier, Jagdish Thakor resigned from the post of state president after being defeated in the 2022 assembly elections. After that, Shaktisinh became the new state president in June 2023. Earlier, Amit Chavda had resigned from the post of state president after getting defeated in the municipal and district panchayat elections held in February-March 2021. It is worth mentioning that Amit Chavda became the state president in 2018.
