Gujarat: 1 Dead After Mob Attacks Police Over Notice Against Illegal Dargah In Junagadh; Visuals Surface

A huge mob of people attacked a police post in Gujarat's Junagadh on Friday night. Reportedly the mob was enraged after a notice was sent by the police against an illegal dargah constructed in the locality. Several vehicles were vandalised in the violence and also some policemen including the Deputy SP was injured in the incident, as per reports.

Visuals of the incident have surfaced on the internet where the mob can be seen hurling stones at the police, while the police officials can be seen throwing tear gas shells to control the situation.

1 Dead, Nearly 200 Detained

According to local police officials, one person has died in the violence and in order to bring the situation under control, the police has detained nearly 200 people. A large number of police and Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed in the area.

Gujarat Police Shares Details Of The Incident

The Gujarat Police has given an official statement giving the details of the incident that claimed one life of a civilian. Superintendent of Police, Junagadh stated that the violence broke over a notice provided to a local mosque. He also told that around 500-600 people were involved in the violence and gave information on the detentions.

"A mosque near Majewadi Gate was given notice by the Junagadh Municipal Corporation to present the documents within 5 days. Around 500-600 people had gathered there yesterday. The police were convincing them not to block the road. Stones were pelted at around 10.15 pm and people came to attack the police. Lathicharge was done by police to disperse the crowd," said Ravi Teja Vasamsetty, SP Junagadh.

"Police personnel got injured in this incident. 174 people have been rounded up. A civilian has died prima facie due to stone pelting but it will be clear after the postmortem report. Further investigation is underway," he added.
