About The Biju Janata Dal
The Biju Janata Dal was founded in December 1997 by Naveen Patnaik following his father's death, legendary leader and former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. The party was established to uphold Biju Patnaik’s legacy and to provide a regional political platform focused on the development of Odisha. Since its inception, Naveen Patnaik has served as its founding president and has remained at the helm of the party for over 27 years, making him one of the longest-serving regional party leaders in the country.
His unbroken tenure as party president reflects both his organisational command and his enduring popularity across Odisha. Under his leadership, the BJD has evolved into a dominant political force in the state, winning multiple state elections and influencing national politics through strategic alliances and issue-based support.
