New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 'puncture repair' remarks on Muslims over the Waqf law met with severe backlash from the opposition leaders, who have called the comment "insensitive and divisive."

The statement, made during the inauguration of an airport in Hisar, Haryana, was in reference to the misuse of Waqf properties and the alleged failure of past governments to ensure their proper management.

PM Modi had said, “If Waqf properties had been used honestly, Muslim youths wouldn't need to earn a livelihood from repairing bicycle punctures. But only a few land mafia benefited from these properties. This mafia was looting lands belonging to Dalit, backward sections and widows.”

He also added that recent amendments to the Waqf law aim to fix these systemic issues.

Congress and AIMIM Hit Back At PM Modi

Opposition leaders accused PM Modi of using language unworthy of his office. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “You are an elected Prime Minister, not an abusive troll,” questioning his remarks and pointing out his absence during a tribute to BR Ambedkar in Parliament.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also responded sharply to his remarks, saying that if the RSS had worked in the country’s interest, the PM “would not need to sell tea” in his childhood.

He further questioned the government's record on poverty and employment, saying, “The biggest reason for what happened with Waqf properties is that Waqf laws were always weak. Modi's Waqf amendments will weaken them further.”

PM Modi Accused For Using 'Troll-Like' Language

The Opposition also criticised the BJP's representation of Muslims. Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi said, “You want to do good for Muslims through the Waqf Bill, but you don't have one Muslim MP to present it in the Lok Sabha.” He further added that the PM's “puncture repair” comment reflects a troll-like language and accused the BJP of sidelining Muslim leaders.

Samajwadi Party’s Abu Azmi also questioned, “If Muslims are poor and fixing punctures, which Muslim have you made MP/MLA or minister?”

The recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which the Opposition opposed, became a law after receiving the Presidential assent, earlier this month.
