Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi has met Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and tendered resignation. Atishi met Saxena at 11 am on Sunday (February 8). Her resignation came just a day after AAP's defeat in Delhi Legislative Assembly Election 2025. Voting for the election took place on February 5. Counting of votes was done on February 8.

Subsequent to Atishi's resignation, the Lieutenane Governor dissolved the Delhi assembly.

The recently concluded elections marked a decisive defeat for AAP which had dominated the Delhi politics for last 10 years. It had near-total grip on power in Delhi Legislative Assembly. Before the elections, AAP had 58 out of 70 seats in Delhi assembly.

The tally came down significantly and AAP has to be content with just 22 seats.

BJP zoomed past the halfway mark (35) and bagged 48 seats. It is set to form government in Delhi after 27 years.

It is not just reduction in tally that's troubling AAP. Nearly all of its top leaders failed to retain their seats with Atishi being the only exception.

AAP top-guns like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai and others were defeated by BJP candidates.

Interestingly, the margin of defeat of Arvind Kejriwal was less that votes bagged by Congress' New Delhi candidate Sandeep Dikshit. Had all of these votes gone to Kejriwal, he would have been able to secure victory. But BJP's Parvesh Singh emerged victorious.

Congress continued it trends of scoring zero in Delhi elections. This was the third time in Delhi that it was not even able to open its account. In past, Congress has been a dominant force in Delhi and ruled the capital for 15 years from 1998 to 2003 under the leadership of the Late Shiela Dikshit. The party faces an existential crisis in Delhi now.
