Valour Day is observed every year across the country on April 9. It is popularly known as Shaurya Diwas. Valour Day of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is dedicated to the bravery of the CRPF soldiers. This year will mark the 60th anniversary of the Central Reserve Police Force.

The CRPF is one of the paramilitary forces in India, which plays a vital role in maintaining law and order and combating internal security threats. The day honours the bravery and sacrifice of CRPF personnel, especially those who fought fearlessly during the battle of 1965 at Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch.

Battle in the Rann of Kutch
The Rann of Kutch, a marshy area in Gujarat, was a disputed region after India gained its independence in 1947. Pakistan claimed parts of it and wanted to submerge the parts in Pakistan. Meanwhile, India considered it part of its territory. In 1956, India established a security post to counter Pakistani infiltration.
However, in 1965, Pakistan launched "Operation Desert Hawk" to assert its territorial claims over the disputed areas in the Rann of Kutch. On April 9, 1965, a brigade of the Pakistan Army attacked the CRPF's Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch. However, despite facing a situation out of control, the CRPF successfully repelled the Pakistani attack. The battle resulted in heavy casualties for the Pakistani Army, but the CRPF also suffered casualties.
Role of CRPF in India?
The CRPF plays a crucial role in maintaining India's internal security. The force is mainly deployed in the troubled regions like Jammu & Kashmir and the Naxal corridors like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. The force also provides security to the VIPs and VVIPs across the country. Apart from all this, the force also participates in natural disasters, crow and riot control and more.
