New Delhi, July 30: Congress party slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi after US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariff on Indian Imports effective August 1. The announcement was made on his Truth Social account on Wednesday. He said that the tariff has been imposed due to the high trade barriers and large trade deficit with India. However, the main reason he cited was India's continued purchases of oil and military equipment from Russia.
President Donald Trump said in the post, "Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!"
He further stated, "INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!"
Congress Party Reacts
In a scathing social media post, Congress said that the country is now paying the price for Modi’s so‑called “friendship” with Trump. The party alleged that while Modi promoted Trump, hugged him repeatedly and used their photos to trend on social media, the U.S. President has now imposed heavy tariffs on India. Congress claimed that this decision exposes the complete failure of the government’s foreign policy and leaves India facing serious economic consequences.
Reacting to the major development, Congress party said in a tweet on its official X account, "Trump ne Bharat par 25% tariff thok diya, saath hi penalty bhi laga di. Narendra Modi ki 'dosti' ka khamiyaza desh bhugat raha hai.
• Modi ne Trump ka prachaar kiya
• Lapak-lapak kar gale mile
• Photo khinchwaakar social media mein trend karaya
Aakhir mein Trump ne Bharat par tariff thok diya. Bharat ki foreign policy poori tarah se fail ho chuki hai."

(Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on India, along with a penalty. The country is paying the price for Narendra Modi's 'friendship.' Modi campaigned for Trump. Hugged him enthusiastically. Got photos taken and made them trend on social media. In the end, Trump slapped tariffs on India. India's foreign policy has completely failed).
