The Congress party has tasked its national chief Mallikarjun Kharge with selecting the next Chief Minister of Karnataka, who will be sworn in along with the cabinet on Thursday, according to sources.
This decision came after a meeting of Karnataka MLAs at a five-star hotel in Bengaluru.
The possibility of a deadlock arose due to Congress leaders DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah expressing interest in the top post. Supporters of both leaders gathered outside the hotel where the meeting was held.
Observers Sushil Kumar Shinde, Deepak Babaria, and Jitendra Singh Alwar attended the Karnataka Congress Legislature Party meeting. The Gandhis and Kharge are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony on Thursday, to which invitations have been extended to all "like-minded" parties.
Those familiar with the matter said the final makeup of the Karnataka cabinet will take shape in a day or two.
