Chennai Weather Update For May 23: City To Experience Light To Moderate Rainfall; IMD Issues Yellow Alert In These Regions Of Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The city woke up at 05: 42 AM and the sun is likely to set at 6: 30 PM on Friday, May 23, 2025. Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius, respectively. The humidity is expected to be around 71 per cent and the wind is expected to blow steadily from Southwest at 19 km/h. The skies are expected to be cloudy and it will remain the same throughout the day.

Rainfall is predicted in Tamil Nadu

The sudden rainfall on Monday gave residents respite from the heatwave. The Regional Meteorological Department predicted light to moderate rainfall in Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Villupuram, Kallakurichy, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Puducherry, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal areas. IMD issued a yellow alert in these regions of Tamil Nadu.

Rainfall is also predicted in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Kanchipuram, Tanjavur, Karu, Namakkal, and Ranipettai districts of Tamil Nadu. The temperatures are also likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius. The rainfall is likely due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea.

IMD issued an advisory

The IMD has said that due to the influence of cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, Chennai is experiencing rainfall. The weather department said that squally wind is likely to blow at a speed of 55 kmph over the South Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Comoroan area. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised fishermen to avoid venturing near the sea.

Southwest monsoon progress

According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon has further advanced over parts of the south Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin area, the central Bay of Bengal, and the south Bay of Bengal. The weather department forecasted that the monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala early, which will bring more rainfall to Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days.
