Chennai Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Is Forecasted In The City & Surrounding Areas; Check Details

Chennai: The monsoon has come to Tamil Nadu, and residents are facing a considerable amount of rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several regions in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.

Tamil Nadu's capital city woke up at 05: 42 AM and the sun is likely to set at 6: 36 PM. Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius, respectively. The humidity is expected to be around 77 per cent.

Today's weather

The RMC has predicted rainfall to continue over Tamil Nadu. The city may experience thunderstorms and gusty winds of speed reaching 30-40 kmph. Rainfall is likely to be heavy in various districts, including Western Ghats, until the weekend. The skies are expected to be cloudy and it will remain the same throughout the day.

Chennai will see partly cloudy skies and moderate to heavy rainfall, which will be accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. According to the weather department, rain activity is likely to continue in Tamil Nadu till June 22, 2025.

Rainfall is predicted in these regions

The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has issued rainfall in Chennai, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Thoothukudi, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Sivaganga, Chengalpattu, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Kanniyakumari, Madurai and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu.

Cyclonic circulation is likely to intensify

The rainfall is likely due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. The weather department also stated that, apart from Tamil Nadu, rainfall is likely to occur in other states, including Odisha, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

According to the RMC, an upper cyclonic circulation prevailing over the northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area. The weather system is likely to intensify further and likely to move in a northwesterly direction in the forthcoming days.
