Srinagar: Hundreds of Doctors protested on Wednesday at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, a day after a patient's attendant allegedly slapped a resident doctor. Doctors from the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and affiliated hospitals gathered at SMHS on Wednesday in a demonstration, reported news agency JKNS.
Doctor Shahnawaz, a 3rd-year PG in Medicine at GMC Srinagar, was allegedly assaulted by a patient's attendant in the emergency ward of SMHS Hospital.
“This is strongly condemnable. A patient came to the emergency ward and slapped a doctor on duty. We are here to serve people, but there must be cooperation and respect,” a group of protesting doctors were quoted saying by news agency JKNS.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing a man slapping the resident doctor inside the hospital premises. In the video, the man enters a room filled with patients and strikes the doctor so forcefully that he gets knocked to the floor. A crowd of people can be seen gathering at the scene.
GMC Administration Reacts
Taking note of the incident that took place on July 22, 2025, the GMC administration confirmed that necessary action under law has been initiated against those involved.

An FIR has been filed in the matter and further investigation is underway.
Similar Incidents
Last week, the kin of a patient who died during treatment at Government Medical College of Jammu assaulted a female doctor, accusing the hospital staff of negligence.
Earlier in the month, a senior doctor at Delhi's GTB hospital was allegedly assaulted by three unidentified individuals.
