Haridwar: Three young men travelling on a motorbike in Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri region narrowly escaped a debris fall while passing below a hillside on Tuesday. The miraculous moment was caught on a nearby CCTV camera amid heavy rainfall and a massive cloudburst in Uttarkashi, which triggered widespread devastation.
The scary CCTV footage shows three men on a busy road approaching a hillside when, within seconds, a torrent of rocks and soil tumbled down, hitting their motorcycle. The debris hit so fast that the bike skidded on the road, throwing the riders to the ground. The incident created panic in the area.
The landslide was triggered by the massive cloudburst that struck Uttarkashi, approximately 100 kilometres from Haridwar, on Tuesday afternoon.
Train Traffic Disrupted
Due to the landslide, train traffic on the Haridwar–Dehradun railway track was disrupted. Authorities reported that debris continued to fall occasionally, blocking the track. The route was partially restored after clearing operations concluded on Wednesday afternoon.
Heavy Rains Continued To Lash Uttarakhand
Heavy rains continued to lash Uttarakhand on Wednesday, creating difficulty in rescue operations after a devastating cloudburst that wreaked havoc in the Uttarkashi district. The death toll in Dharali rose to five and more than 60 people are feared trapped or missing in the region. 400 people, including 13 soldiers, have been rescued since Tuesday.
Landslides At Various Places
Visuals of landslides at various places have surfaced. The Uttarkashi-Harsil road in Ganganani of Uttarkashi has been completely washed out. The road from Ganganani to Harsil has been completely blocked.
Rescue Operations Underway
Rescue operations are still underway, five teams of ITBP, consisting of 130 jawans have been deployed in Dharali. More than 100 jawans are en route, and they will reach there soon. More than 400 people have been rescued.
IMD Issues Red Alert
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rain today in several areas, including Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar, while other regions remain under an orange alert.
