Bengaluru: What was supposed to be a day of celebration, turned into a tragedy on Wednesday, as a stampede took place outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, claiming at least seven lives and leaving over 30 others injured. All casualties and injured persons have been rushed to Bowring Hospital for treatment and identification.
The incident, took place in the afternoon hours, as a sea of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans swarmed the stadium to take part in celebrations marking the franchise's first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title win.
Slamming the Congress-led state government for the crowd mismangement, the Bhartiya Janata Party's Karnataka unit posted on X, "7 dead. Many are battling for life after a stampede due to the irresponsibility of Congress govt."
Posting disturbing visuals of police and volunteers rushing the injured on their shoulders, the BJP said, "No crowd control measures. No basic arrangements. Just chaos." Hitting out at CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivkumar the party posted, "While innocent people died, @siddaramaiah & @DKShivakumar were busy shooting reels & hogging limelight with cricketers. Shame on this photo-op Congress government."
The BJP further said,"This is criminal negligence. Blood is on the hands of Congress govt."
The Congress government canceled the procession because of the unanticiapted crowd could not be controlled. Despite the procession getting called off the stampede took place.
DCM DK ShivKumar also apologised for cancelling the prosession due to an unimaginable crowd.
Despite the tragedy the event continued as per schedule in the presence of CM Siddaramaiah & DCM DK Shivakumar. The death toll is expected to go up.
