Notably, the person elected as the Vice-President will serve for the full five-year term from the date on which he/she takes charge. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the notification about the vacancy on July 22, 2025.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, on July 21, resigned from the post of Vice President of India, citing health issues. Dhankhar's sudden decision to resign from the post sparked a massive political controversy. Several opposition leaders raised doubts over his sudden exit on the first day of Parliament's monsoon session.

"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," Dhankhar said in his resignation letter.

Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India in 2022. He defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential election held on August 6, 2022. Dhankhar got 528 votes out of a total of 725, while Margaret Alva got 182 votes. Before serving as the Vice President, he was the Governor of West Bengal.

Earlier in December 2024, the INDIA bloc moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar, alleging partisan functioning of the House.

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote, and the voting in such an election is by secret ballot.

An election to fill a vacancy caused by the expiry of the term of office of Vice-President is completed before the expiry of the term. In case a vacancy arises by reasons of death, resignation or removal or otherwise, the election to fill that vacancy is held as soon as possible after the occurrence. The person so elected is entitled to hold office for a full term of five years from the date he enters office.
