Chandigarh Mayor Polls 2025: BJP's Harpreet Kaur Babla Elected As New Mayor With 19 Votes

BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh. Babla received 19 votes while, the Congress-AAP candidate Prem Lata managed to secure only 17 votes.

Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday won the Chandigarh Mayor polls 2025 defeating the Congress-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alliance. BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh.

There are 35 members in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Notably, the Chandigarh MP also has voting rights as an ex-officio member. Manish Tewari is Congress Lok Sabha MP from Chandigarh Polling for electing the mayor began at 11:20 am and ended at 12:19 pm.

Before the polling, in the 35-member House, the AAP-Congress alliance had 19 councillors -- 13 votes of AAP and six of the Congress, while the BJP had 16 votes.

Babla received 19 votes while, the Congress-AAP candidate Prem Lata managed to secure only 17 votes. Meanwhile, three councillors reportedly cross-voted.

BJP councillor's congratulating Babla:

Earlier this week, Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat joined the BJP. The polling was held through secret ballot. Nominated councillor Ramneek Singh Bedi was designated as the presiding officer. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had appointed retired Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Jaishree Thakur was appointed as an independent observer.

Who Is Harpreet Kaur Babla?

The BJP's Harpreet Babla, the second time councillor, is the daughter of a retired Army Colonel and is married to former councillor Devinder Singh Babla, who was previously with the Congress.
